Waikato Country Music Awards

Wow! Someone hasn’t posted on their blog for 5 or 6 years! Oops.. very sorry about that. I wonder if 2019 will be a year of change in that regard?

It was my pleasure to attend the Waikato Country Music Awards in Morrinsville on Saturday 13th April 2019.

I was very grateful to be acknowledged as ‘Overall Songwriter Winner’ with my original song ‘When I Came Back to Country’, and I was able to perform the song live with a backing band at the finals concert. This award allows me entry into Entertainer of the Year with other songwriters who have won the songwriting section at other country awards events in this current circuit year. I look forward to performing my song again at that event and hearing the songs of the other talented songwriters too.

I wrote this song about my return to country music and I wanted to acknowledge the many special people I have met along the way, many of whom are no longer with us. Notably I would like to mention the following people who have passed away – Gina Cribb, Craven Noble, Mary Petit (Aunty) and my late grandfathers Lindsay James and Dick Keen who were all extremely influential in the early years of my country music journey.

My very first rough recording of the song (after I had just written it) can be found here. I have made a few changes to the song since, but you get the idea… 🙂
